Softwood

SPF: Spruce, Pine, and Fir, the three softwood species that make up SPF lumber products, are processed together due to similar appearance and properties. SPF represents the largest reserve of commercial softwood in Canada.


SPF is the most commonly used lumber for house construction (known as “2x4”) in North America due to its strength, light weight and ease in cutting and nailing. Kiln-dried to a maximum 19% moisture content, SPF is used primarily for wall framing, roof framing, roof trusses, floor joists and beams. In addition, certain grades are suitable for non-structural applications such as packaging and re-manufacturing.
Sizes: CLS SPF lumber is described by its nominal size, which differs from actual size.
 
Thickness: 1 inch and 2 inches (actual thickness is 19mm and 38mm).


Width: From 3 inches to 12 inches (actual width is 63mm to 285mm).


Length: Increments of two feet (0.6m), from 6 feet (1.8m) to 20 feet (6.0m). Packaged one length per bundle and wrapped for protection against moisture.


Grades: All North American grades under the Canadian Lumber Standards are available. We also produce a Premium Export #2+Btr which is a highline appearance product (also known as J-Grade). ATI maintains a strict Quality Assurance Program for export grades..

Douglas Fir

Douglas fir is one of the most magnificent trees in the world. Once holding the world's height record, a tree was harvested in Capilano Valley, a few miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia in 1895. This tree scaled at 129.64 Mtrs. (417'). Ring counts from large firs show they may live upwards of 1000 years. This species ranges from British Columbia south through the western states to the Mexican sierras and inland through the Rocky Mountains. In the 1800's timber merchants exported its timber to Europe as "Oregon pine", because of its pine like characteristics. This name is still in use by many European timbermen. The old growth harvest of the past has been largely replaced by replanting and harvest cycles of about 40 years. Modern State and Federal controls ensure the replacement of this great economic and social resource.

Douglas fir shows a distinct division between the hard red-brown summerwood bands and the paler, softer, pinkish-yellow summerwood. The summerwood band is normally evenly proportional to the springwood of the same growth cycle. This strong, dense summerwood makes the species very serviceable for heavy construction work. Overall this species is soft and easy to work, though the hardness differences between spring- and summerwood require care with cutting tools. It is light, yet strong and firm, but not durable outdoors unless preservative treated.

The good physical properties of Douglas fir, its availability in large quantities and big sizes, have led to its use for a wide range of purposes. It is applied to heavy constructional work; in house- and factory building, railroad and dock engineering, and also in bridging and shipbuilding. It is used for railroad ties, mine props, transmission poles for electric power, packing cases and pallets, indoor joinery and general carpentry.

 

 

Western Hemlock

Western Hemlock is also known as West Coast Hemlock, Pacific Hemlock and Western Hem-Fir.

 

This timber species grows along the Northwest Pacific coast from Oregon through British Columbia to Alaska. It ranges inland to the Rocky Mountains.

 

The heartwood and sapwood are white with a blue-purple tinge. The wood frequently contains small, sound black knots that are usually intergrown and stay in place.

 

Hemlock is moderate in weight, stiffness, shock resistance and strength. It is used for lumber, timbers and plywood. The building materials manufactured include; sheathing or shuttering plywood, siding, joists, rafters, sub floor and studding.

 

Considerable quantities are used for industrial applications such as: boxes, pallets, crates, flooring, ladders and smaller quantities of finish grades for furniture and casement goods.

 

The species combination Hem-Fir includes Western Hemlock, Pacific Silver Fir, Noble Fir, Grand Fir, California Red Fir, and White Fir. Design values are equivalent under grading rules.

 

 

Ponderosa Pine

Ponderosa pine, also called western yellow pine, is one of the most widely distributed pines in western North America. A major source of timber, ponderosa pine forests are also important as wildlife habitat, for recreational use, and for esthetic values.

 

Within its extensive range, two varieties of the species currently are recognized: Pinus ponderosa var. ponderosa (Pacific ponderosa pine) (typical) and var. scopulorum (Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine). Arizona pine (P. arizonica), sometimes classified as a variety of ponderosa pine, is presently recognized as a separate species. 

 

Ponderosa pine wood is principally used in millwork, including windows, doors, shelving, molding, knotty-pine paneling and dimension lumber. Sap used as glue and source of turpentine oils.

 

Native Americans used inner bark and seed as food, sap was used as a chewing gum. Source of pyrone used as a FDA approved flavoring to bread and cakes.


Medicinal - Pinus species have been used as an antiseptic, an expectorant, a poultice to treat boils, rheumatism, backaches and other inflammations.

 

Ponderosa Pine forests are usually selectively harvested rather than clear cut. This method of logging removes only the mature trees and leaves the other trees to re-seed and mature. Selective harvesting often makes it difficult to identify a recently logged stand.

Ponderosa Pine is one of the Western pine species that includes Idaho White Pine (pinus monticola), Sugar Pine (pinus lambertiana) and Lodgepole Pine (pinus contorta). The Western pines are distinct from the Southern Yellow pines which are denser and pitchier, with widely different characteristics and uses.

 

Ponderosa Pine is one of America's abundant tree species, covering approximately 27 million acres of land. Stands can be found from Canada to Mexico and from the Pacific Coast eastward to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Its growth range covers an area encompassing more than 35 percent of the total acreage of the U.S.

 

Ponderosa Pine trees average 100' to 160' in height, with some exceeding 180'. The trees range from 2-4' in diameter, with the rate of growth depending upon titleitude, soil, temperature and rainfall.

 

Mature Ponderosa Pines can be easily identified by their distinctive orange-brown bark which is arranged in large plates. The dark yellow-green needles are 5-10" long and grow in clusters of three. The cones, similar in color to the bark, are 3-6" long and 2-4" in diameter. Seeds are 5/16-3/8" long with a 3/4-1" wing.

 

Ponderosa Pine is well suited for remanufacturing which requires clear, splinter-free wood, with a minimum of knots, resin and other unwanted characteristics. The large trees include substantial volumes of virtually clear sapwood with relatively few, widely-spaced knots. Shop and Factory lumber is graded to yield standard cuttings of clear material suitable for fabrication. Such wood is selected to be almost completely free from pitch and resin pockets, has an even grain and is dimensionally stable. Ponderosa also ranks moderately high for ease of gluing and is used for all types of products where glued-up construction is required.

 

The species is prized for moulding and for doors, windows, frames and drawers where durability under movement is essential. It has the ability to withstand scuffs, shocks and jars without spliting, which makes it the premier wood for these and other applications such as sashes, jambs, shutters, screens, columns, stairwork and fascia. Pine paneling is often associated with Early American decor in kitchens, family rooms, dens and bedrooms. However, new finishing techniques and patterns make it appropriate for contemporary or traditional settings.

 

Industrial uses for Ponderosa Pine include pallets, concrete forms, crates and boxes, dunnage, hives, partitions and foundry patterns. It is also used for a wide variety of wood packaging and novelty items such as boats, wagons, toys, window shade slats, rat and mouse traps.
